I guess what I'm saying is that being a tradesman is a state of mind and whether you're welding or selling tchotchkes in the middle of the night on QVC.

And there simply is no better way to show what's important than by removing it from his sight. Meanwhile, two-year colleges – including technical schools – saw their enrollments rise from 4.5 million in 1980 to 5.8 million in 2020, just a 29% increase. And just because you're passionate about becoming an American Idol doesn't mean you're going to win. You promote one thing not to the betterment of itself, but at the expense of the other.
They're clever and then they get socialized and now everybody is like, “Oh good, you know science, technology, engineering and math.” But I went on a rant a few years ago that it should be STEMS. It's a long way of saying “eat your peas.” And I don't want to sound like a grumpy old guy on the on the porch yelling at kids to get off the lawn. And the other way is if you're going to follow something, follow opportunity. And many industries have recognized this education path as the key to the future skilled workforce.
And I'd say the same thing to a lawyer or an accountant or a crab fisherman or whatever.
These are not the jobs your parents hope and pray you get.

QVC was not the job I wanted. Its findings – that the average secondary and college graduate was not as well-educated as the average graduate of prior generations – led to a newfound emphasis on academic rather than vocational courses.
